IB Academic Guidance

Helping IB students choose the right subjects, select universities and navigate applications, worldwide.

Get academic guidance

In the IB, academic guidance means supporting the decisions that shape a student's path through the Diploma and beyond, from subject choices to university selection and applications. Because IB students apply all over the world, our guidance is built around the IB and not tied to any single national system.

What it covers

  • Subject & Higher Level choices, see our guide on choosing your IB subjects.
  • University shortlisting matched to the student's goals and IB profile.
  • Application strategy and timelines across different systems.
  • Personal statements, essays and references.
  • Predicted-grades strategy, see raising your IB predicted grades.

Built around the IB

IB applications work differently: predicted grades drive conditional offers, the Diploma is recognised internationally, and the Extended Essay is real evidence of research for a personal statement. We also make sure Higher Level choices line up with the prerequisites of target courses. This is the single most common reason applications fall short.

Applying across different systems

IB students apply to the UK (UCAS), the US (Common App), Canada, Europe and beyond, each with its own format and deadlines. We guide students through whichever system fits their goals.

French & francophone families: if your child takes the IB but wants to keep French higher education open, the IB is recognised by Parcoursup. We guide them through Parcoursup alongside international applications, so they don't have to choose one world over the other.

Frequently asked questions

What is academic guidance in the IB context?

It is support for the academic decisions that shape an IB student’s future: choosing subjects and Higher Levels, shortlisting universities, and managing applications. Because IB students apply all over the world, it is not tied to a single national system.

Can an IB student apply to French universities through Parcoursup?

Yes. The IB Diploma is recognised by Parcoursup, the French higher-education platform, so a student taking the IB can apply to French universities through it, alongside, or instead of, applications abroad.

When should we start university guidance?

Ideally from the start of the Diploma, because Higher Level choices in the first year already shape which courses are open later. The application year (DP2) then focuses on shortlisting, essays and deadlines.
